Heat efficiently: 8 tips to lower your gas use

With a few simple changes you can noticeably lower your gas use, without being cold. These are eight practical tips to heat more efficiently.

1. Heat at a lower flow temperature

Many boilers are set unnecessarily high. A lower flow temperature (heating water) considerably raises the efficiency of a high-efficiency boiler. We set this for you.

2. Bleed your radiators

Air in the radiators causes poor heat distribution and higher usage. Bleed them at the start of the heating season.

3. Keep the water pressure up

Too low a water pressure makes the boiler work less well and can cause faults. Check the gauge and top up to about 1.5 bar if needed.

4. Use a smart or programmable thermostat

Automatic setback while you sleep or are away saves gas directly. Read more about the smart thermostat.

5. Turn the temperature down a degree

One degree lower already makes a noticeable difference to your usage. A jumper is quickly put on.

6. Have your boiler serviced every year

A clean, well-adjusted boiler uses less. Read why annual maintenance pays off and what boiler maintenance costs.

7. Insulate and seal draughts

Draught strips, radiator foil behind radiators and good insulation keep the heat inside.

8. Heat only what you use

Turn radiators down in rooms you rarely use. That way you heat where it matters.
