Carbon monoxide: the invisible danger and how to prevent it

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odourless, colourless and dangerous gas that can be released by a poorly working or poorly maintained boiler or geyser. There are victims every year. Good maintenance and a CO alarm prevent most risks.

How does carbon monoxide arise?

CO arises from incomplete combustion of gas, for example due to dirt, a blocked or leaking flue or insufficient ventilation. Older geysers and poorly maintained boilers pose the greatest risk.

Symptoms of CO poisoning

• Headache, dizziness and nausea
• Fatigue and difficulty concentrating
• Symptoms that disappear when you are outside

Do you suspect CO? Ventilate immediately, go outside and call the emergency number. Then have your system checked.

How to prevent carbon monoxide

• Have your boiler serviced every year, so combustion and the flue are checked
• Place an approved CO alarm near the boiler and in bedrooms
• Ensure sufficient ventilation and keep vents clear
• Replace a heavily outdated geyser or boiler in good time
